Autumn is the best time to see Azerbaijan from behind the wheel. The summer heat is gone, the forests of the Greater Caucasus turn gold, orange and red, and the orchards around Goychay are busy with the pomegranate harvest. If you are planning a self-drive Azerbaijan road trip, the strongest route for these weeks is a 3-day loop from Baku through Shamakhi, Goychay, Sheki and Gabala, returning via Ismayilli and Lahij.

This guide brings the Goychay Pomegranate Festival 2026, the historic sights of Sheki, Gabala's autumn scenery and the mountain village of Lahij into a single itinerary. You will also find a ready plan for the 7–9 November long weekend, driving distances for each leg, the best cars for the route, a trip budget and a pre-trip checklist. It is written for visitors searching for car rental in Baku, rent a car at Baku airport or simply the best time to visit Azerbaijan for a road trip.

1. Why Autumn Is the Best Season for a Road Trip in Azerbaijan

Every season in Azerbaijan has its charm, but for a road trip autumn beats the rest. In summer the heat in the Kura lowlands and on the Absheron Peninsula makes long drives tiring, and in winter snow and ice complicate the mountain roads. October and early November sit comfortably between those extremes.

1.1. Weather and Road Conditions in October and November

In autumn the weather in Baku and the lowland regions is usually mild and comfortable for driving. In the foothills, especially around Gabala and Ismayilli, mornings and evenings are cooler. October brings some rainfall to the mountains, November brings more, and the first signs of snow appear at higher elevations. In the south, including Lankaran, the wettest period runs from September to November.

When planning an Azerbaijan autumn itinerary, pack a light jacket and rain gear, and check the forecast before each leg. Main highways are easy to drive. On mountain passes and village roads, a car with higher ground clearance is more comfortable and safer.

1.2. Hotel Prices and Crowds in Autumn

According to international travel sources, September and October are among the best months in Azerbaijan for finding good deals on hotels and transport. The summer rush fades, hotel prices dip in central Baku and across the regions, and popular places feel calmer. That makes the Sheki Khan's Palace, Gabala and Lahij much more pleasant to explore.

1.3. Where and When to See the Autumn Colors

The best of the foliage is found in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus. Beech, hornbeam and oak forests usually turn gold, orange and red from mid-October to early November. The most photographed places are:

  • Gabala and the Nohur Lake area: a mountain lake surrounded by forest
  • Ismayilli and the road to Lahij: deep canyons and an ancient mountain village
  • Sheki and its surroundings: centuries-old plane trees and historic architecture
  • The Goychay pomegranate orchards: during harvest the trees are heavy with red fruit

Autumn is also a popular time for wine tasting and nature walks around Gabala and nearby districts.

2. Where to Go on the 7–9 November Long Weekend? (Victory Day and State Flag Day Holiday)

In 2026 the November holiday runs for three days in a row: Saturday 7 November, Sunday 8 November (Victory Day) and Monday 9 November (State Flag Day). It is one of the best windows of the autumn for a road trip from Baku, whether you are visiting Azerbaijan or traveling with family and friends.

Quick answer: For the 7–9 November long weekend, the best road trip from Baku is a 3-day loop via Shamakhi, Goychay, Sheki and Gabala. Short on time? Choose a 1-day Quba and Shahdag trip or a 2-day Gabala getaway. The full day-by-day route is in Section 4.

Public transport and group tours tie you to fixed schedules. With your own rental car in Baku you can stop wherever you like, photograph the Goychay pomegranate orchards and stay as long as you want in Sheki and Gabala. Many residents also use the long weekend to travel, so popular regions can be busier than usual. November is also close to the Goychay Pomegranate Festival season. The festival is held in October–November, and the exact date will be added to this article once it is announced.

Calendar: 7–9 November 2026

Note: Non-working days are set by decision of the Cabinet of Ministers. Some sources also list 10 November as a day off. Check the official calendar before you finalize your plans.

2.1. The Best 3-Day Route for the Long Weekend

For 7–9 November we recommend the loop Baku → Shamakhi → Goychay → Sheki → Gabala → Ismayilli / Lahij → Baku. On day one you reach Sheki, on day two you explore the historic town, and on day three you return to Baku via Gabala and Lahij.

The 7–9 November long weekend is one of the best times of the autumn for a family road trip.

The 3 days at a glance:

  1. 7 November (Saturday): Leave Baku early, make a short stop in Shamakhi, see the Goychay pomegranate orchards and reach Sheki in the evening.
  2. 8 November (Sunday): Sheki Khan's Palace, the Caravanserai and the old streets. Try the local cuisine in the evening.
  3. 9 November (Monday): Gabala, Nohur Lake and Ismayilli on the way back to Baku. If you have time, add the mountain village of Lahij.

Drive times, distances and stops for every leg are in Section 4, in a table.

  • Couples: A Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage is both comfortable and economical.
  • First-time visitors: Picking up the car at the airport and driving straight onto the route is the easiest way to start.
💡 Expert Tip: In early November it gets dark early. Try to finish each day's driving in daylight and avoid mountain roads after dark. Add refueling and road snacks to your daily plan.

2.2. Why You Should Book Your Rental Car in Advance

Over holidays and long weekends, interest in car rental in Baku can be high, especially for SUVs and 7-seat models. If you leave it to the last minute, you risk not finding the model you want. The benefits of booking early:

  • Choice: You can pick the SUV or 7-seat car that fits your route best.
  • Free delivery: The car is delivered to Heydar Aliyev International Airport or to your Baku hotel at no extra charge.

3. Goychay Pomegranate Festival 2026: When, Where and What to See

Goychay (Göyçay) lies in the center of Azerbaijan, in the northeast of the Kura-Araz lowland, and is known as the country's "pomegranate capital." Every autumn its orchards fill with ripe red fruit, and the town hosts the famous Goychay Pomegranate Festival (Nar Bayrami). Add Goychay to your autumn road trip and you will see a living cultural tradition and taste pomegranate products in the very place where Azerbaijan's best-known fruit grows.

The pomegranate harvest in Goychay begins in autumn.
Quick answer: The Goychay Pomegranate Festival is traditionally held in the Goychay district in October–November. The exact 2026 date has not been confirmed yet, and this article will be updated once it is officially announced. You can check the date on the official pages of the Goychay District Executive Authority and on Azerbaijan Tourism Board.

3.1. History of the Festival and Its UNESCO Status

The Pomegranate Festival (Nar Bayrami) is a traditional celebration held in the Goychay district during the harvest. It was first organized in 2006 and has been celebrated every year since. In Azerbaijan the pomegranate is a symbol of abundance, fertility and eternity, so the festival is more than an agricultural event: it is part of the country's cultural heritage.

The Goychay Pomegranate Festival is inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. The status highlights the importance of passing pomegranate-growing knowledge, cuisine, crafts and festive traditions on to future generations. Visitors who come to Goychay are therefore not just attending a festival, they are stepping into a protected cultural tradition.

3.2. Festival Program: Pomegranate Fair, Juice, Tasting and Contests

The program changes from year to year, but the festival usually includes:

ActivityWhat you will see
Pomegranate fairDifferent pomegranate varieties and products made from them
TastingPomegranate juice and dishes of Azerbaijani cuisine
Cultural programFolklore, dance and song groups, and a concert
Sports performancesShows by young athletes
ContestsThe biggest pomegranate, pomegranate squeezing and pomegranate-throwing competitions

The festival takes place in the central square of the town and attracts local residents as well as guests from other regions and abroad. If you travel with children, the squeezing contests and games make it a fun family stop.

3.3. Visiting the Orchards and Markets of Goychay

Even if you cannot catch the festival, Goychay is worth a visit in autumn. According to a news report by AZERTAG on the harvest, the district has more than 10,000 hectares of productive pomegranate orchards. Picking begins in late October and early November, and orchards and local markets sell pomegranates, juice, dried seeds and other products. Goychay pomegranates are in demand not only locally but also in export markets such as Russia, Ukraine and Moldova.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Festival and the Orchards

  • Leave early: On festival day the center can be crowded and parking can be difficult. Arriving before midday is easier.
  • Bring cash: Paying in cash (AZN) is convenient at markets and small stalls.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: Paths to the orchards can be dirt tracks, especially after rain.
  • Ask permission in orchards: Orchards are farmers' private land, so ask the owner before taking photos or picking fruit.
  • Check first: Confirm the festival date and program from official sources before you go.

3.4. Pomegranate Products: What to Taste and What to Buy

In Goychay, pomegranate is sold not only fresh but in many forms. The most popular are:

ProductWhat it isHow it is used
Pomegranate juiceFreshly squeezed or factory-made juiceAs a drink
Anardana (dried seeds)Dried pomegranate seedsAs a spice in dishes and salads
Narsharab (pomegranate sauce)A thick pomegranate sauce made by boiling the juice downWith meat, fish and kebab
Pomegranate jamA sweet preserve made from pomegranateWith tea and in desserts
Pomegranate wineA drink made by fermenting pomegranateOffered at local tastings
💡 Expert Tip: Dried seeds, pomegranate sauce and jam are the easiest products to carry home as gifts, so pack them carefully in your luggage. If you plan to try alcoholic drinks such as pomegranate wine, do not drive afterwards. Azerbaijan has a zero-tolerance rule for drinking and driving. If you plan a tasting, travel with a designated driver or taste only where you are staying the night.

Add Goychay to your route: The full plan of our 3-day autumn loop and the drive time to Goychay are in Section 4. You can pick up a car with airport or hotel delivery from our SUV fleet in Baku. Questions? WhatsApp: +994 55 696 55 55.

4. Baku – Shamakhi – Goychay – Sheki – Gabala – Baku: A 3-Day Autumn Road Trip

This section lays out the 3-day autumn road trip from Baku day by day: where to go, how far it is, where to stop and what to do. The route is a loop, so you never drive the same road twice. You head out through Shamakhi and Goychay and return through Gabala and Ismayilli. In three days you see four very different sides of Azerbaijan: historic Shirvan, pomegranate orchards, the Silk Road town of Sheki and mountain forests.

Quick answer: The drive from Baku to Sheki is roughly 285–325 km (depending on the road you choose) and takes about 4–5 hours. In this 3-day plan you reach Sheki on day 1 via Shamakhi and Goychay, explore Sheki on day 2 and return to Baku on day 3 via Gabala and Ismayilli.

4.1. Route Map and Distances

The detailed plan for day 3 is in the next part (4.4).

4.2. Day 1: From Baku to Sheki via Shamakhi and Goychay

The drive from Baku to Shamakhi is easy and takes about 2 hours. There are three worthwhile stops on the Shamakhi road: the Diri Baba Mausoleum, the Shamakhi Juma Mosque and the Yeddi Gumbaz complex. After that you continue toward Aghsu and Goychay.

15:00Goychay to Shekiabout 1.5–2 hours (estimate)
17:00ShekiCheck in, dinner

This schedule is a sample. Real times depend on traffic and how long you stop. The best plan is to leave early so you reach Sheki in daylight.

Diri Baba Mausoleum (Maraza)

The Diri Baba Mausoleum stands beside the Baku–Shamakhi road in the village of Maraza. This two-story 15th-century mausoleum-mosque leans against a rocky slope and is surrounded by many legends. It makes a perfect short stop, and Shamakhi is only about 25–30 minutes further on.

Shamakhi: Juma Mosque and Yeddi Gumbaz

Shamakhi was one of the ancient capitals of the Shirvanshahs. The Shamakhi Juma Mosque is dated to the 8th century and is considered one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus. You remove your shoes before entering, so wear comfortable socks. Nearby, the Yeddi Gumbaz ("Seven Domes") complex holds the tombs of the Shamakhi khans on a hillside. Earthquakes have left only part of the domes standing.

💡 Expert Tip: Dress modestly at mosques and mausoleums: shoulders and knees covered, and women should carry a headscarf. Ask the staff before photographing inside.

Goychay: Pomegranate Orchards and Market

After Shamakhi you drive to Goychay via Aghsu. In autumn the town comes alive with pomegranate orchards and markets. The orchards belong to farmers, so ask permission before taking photos or picking fruit. You can read more about the festival in Section 3. Have lunch in Goychay and buy pomegranate sauce, dried seeds and fresh juice.

From Goychay to Sheki

The road from Goychay to Sheki runs through foothills and village roads. Fill up with fuel in Goychay, because stations can be sparse on the way. Try to arrive before dark: in early November it starts to get dark at around 17:00–17:30.

4.3. Day 2: Sheki Khan's Palace, Caravanserai, Halva and Kish Church

Sheki is a historic city in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus and was a major trading hub on the Great Silk Road. The Historic Centre of Sheki with the Khan's Palace was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 7 July 2019. Here is how to cover the best things to do in Sheki in one day.

Sample Schedule for Day 2

Sheki Khan's Palace

The Sheki Khan's Palace is a two-story summer palace from the 18th century (1797). Its most famous feature is the shebeke windows: thousands of pieces of colored glass are fitted into a wooden lattice without nails or glue. Sunlight throws colored patterns across the rooms, and the walls and ceilings are covered with frescoes. The ancient plane and oak trees in the courtyard turn golden in autumn.

Colorful shebeke stained glass windows of the Sheki Khan's Palace and golden plane trees in autumn
The Sheki Khan's Palace is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Note: The palace charges admission. A tourist ticket price of around 15 AZN is quoted by tour operators and may change. Confirm the price and opening hours on the spot. You can also take good photos from viewpoints outside the palace.

Near the palace complex you will also find the Sheki Khan Museum and the Khans' second palace (Winter Palace). If you have time, visit them too.

Sheki Caravanserai

Sheki has two historic caravanserais, the Upper and the Lower Caravanserai. They were places where Silk Road merchants rested and traded. Today one of them welcomes guests, while the other can be visited as a historic monument. Stone walls and heavy wooden gates bring the medieval atmosphere to life.

Sheki Halva and Sheki Piti

Do not leave Sheki without trying these two local specialties:

DishWhat it isNote
Sheki halvaA layered sweet made with rice flour, nuts and sugar syrup, with a lattice patternOne of the best gifts to take home
Sheki pitiA dish of lamb, chickpeas, chestnuts and saffron cooked in a clay potTraditionally eaten in two stages: first the broth, then the meat

Taste halva in local sweet shops and protect the packaging in your luggage. Ordering piti ahead (by calling your hotel or restaurant) is often easier, because it takes time to prepare.

Kish Albanian Church

Kish village is about 5 km north of Sheki. Its Albanian church reflects the early Christian heritage of Caucasian Albania and is considered one of the oldest Christian temples in the Caucasus. The church is built of stone and has a simple, peaceful atmosphere. A small museum and historic remains in the courtyard are also worth a look. Check the admission price and opening hours on the spot.

Old Town and Crafts

In the evening, stroll along the cobbled streets of the old town. You can see shebeke, silk and other craft workshops and have tea in a traditional tea house. Parking a large vehicle in the narrow streets of Sheki can be difficult, so leave the car at your hotel or in a car park near the palace and explore on foot.

Need a car for your Sheki trip? Pick up an SUV at the airport or at your hotel in Baku: browse our SUV fleet or message us on WhatsApp: +994 55 696 55 55.

4.4. Day 3: From Sheki to Gabala, Nohur Lake, Seven Beauties Waterfall and Back to Baku

Day three is the most scenic stretch of the route. You drive from Sheki to Gabala, see the morning mist over forest-ringed Nohur Lake, visit the Seven Beauties Waterfall, and then, if you like, ride the Tufandag cable car up the mountain or walk the ruins of ancient Chukhur Gabala. After that you return to Baku via Ismayilli. The best things to do in Gabala look their finest in autumn, when the forests turn gold and orange.

Quick answer: The drive from Sheki to Gabala is about 85 km (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes) and the drive from Gabala to Baku is about 220 km (roughly 3 hours 15 minutes). Because it gets dark early in early November, it is hard to fit both Gabala and Lahij into one day. If you want to go to Lahij, either shorten your stops in Gabala or save Lahij for a separate day.

Gabala: An Ancient Capital and a Modern Mountain Resort

Gabala sits at the foot of the Greater Caucasus and has two faces. It is a modern resort town, and it is also the site of the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. According to archaeological evidence, the city was active from the 4th century BC. The drive from Baku to Gabala is easy and takes about 3 hours 15 minutes via Ismayilli.

Nohur Lake

Nohur Lake (Nohurgöl) lies about 5 km east of Gabala, between the village of Vandam and the town. The lake covers roughly 240 hectares and is ringed by the Yumuru, Goydag and Gulluburun mountains. In autumn the golden forests reflect in the water, and in the morning a light mist hangs over the surface. Come in the morning for the best views.

Calm mountain lake surrounded by golden, orange and red autumn forest hills, the forest mirrored in the water, an old wooden pier and a boat on the shore and morning mist over the lake
Nohur Lake in autumn with morning mist and golden forest.

At Nohur Lake you can:

  • Stroll along the shore: There are easy paths by the water, with restaurants and entertainment venues lined up nearby.
  • Take a boat or pedal boat: A shared boat is quoted at around 10 AZN per person, and the price may change.
  • Take photos: Morning mist and autumn colors give the best shots.
Note: The lake also works as a reservoir and a source of drinking water, so swimming is prohibited. Respect the local rules.

Seven Beauties Waterfall

The Seven Beauties Waterfall (Yeddi Gözəl) lies in a forested gorge near the village of Vandam. The name comes from its seven cascading levels. Do not expect a huge, Niagara-style waterfall: it is a small, stepped waterfall in the forest and a pleasant green stop. Sometimes you cannot see all the levels, and parts of the climb are steep.

💡 Expert Tip: After rain the stone and wooden steps are slippery, so wear shoes with good grip. The waterfall is sometimes temporarily closed, so check the situation in the morning before you reach Gabala.

Tufandag Cable Car and Gabala Attractions (Optional)

Tufandag is a year-round mountain complex about 4 km from the center of Gabala. It is best known as a ski resort in winter, but the cable car also opens panoramic views of the slopes, forests and the Gabala valley in autumn. If you are traveling with children, Gabala also has the Gabaland amusement park. Check the cable car's operating hours and ticket price in advance, because they can change with the weather and season.

Chukhur Gabala: The Ancient Capital of Caucasian Albania

If you love history, visit the Chukhur Gabala reserve, about 15–20 km southwest of the district center. It holds the fortress walls and excavation sites of the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. The nearby Gabala Archaeological Center museum explains the region's history in detail. Pick one of Tufandag or Chukhur Gabala, because fitting both in is hard on time.

Ismayilli and Lahij Village (Option B)

Lahij is an ancient mountain village in the Ismayilli district, on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus at roughly 1,200–1,500 m above sea level. People here speak Tat, the village is known for its coppersmithing, and its main street is cobbled and about 1 km long. You hear the hammering of copper workshops from every side, and the village has the status of a cultural reserve.

Lahij is famous for its coppersmiths and cobblestone streets.

About the road:

  • Distance: Lahij is about 180–185 km from Baku. The turnoff from the Baku–Ismayilli highway (near the Girdimanchay river bridge) leads about 24 km to the village and takes 50 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Road character: The road follows the Girdimanchay canyon and is narrow and winding, with steep drops in places. After rain there can be rockfalls and debris. Sources say the Ismayilli–Lahij road was paved after 2022, but check its current condition before you go.
  • Car: A high-clearance SUV is the more comfortable and safer choice.
💡 Expert Tip: Do not drive the Lahij road in the dark or in the rain. Allow at least 2 hours for the drive there and back, plus 1 hour to walk around the village. In other words, plan at least 3 hours for Lahij. Because it gets dark early in November, choose Option B only if the weather is good and you can leave Gabala by 13:00.

This schedule is very tight and suits only good weather, an early start and an experienced driver. The relaxed alternative is to save Lahij for a separate day (see 4.5 below).

Returning to Baku

The road from Gabala to Baku runs through Ismayilli and Shamakhi and takes about 3 hours 15 minutes. The Aghsu mountain bends and the Ismayilli forests can be foggy in places, so slow down, use low beams (and fog lights in thick fog) and do not use high beams. Fill up with fuel in Gabala or Ismayilli.

4.5. Short and Extended Options: 2, 3, 4 and 5-Day Plans

You can shorten or extend the route to fit your time and interests. The table below compares four options:

If the holiday is extended by official decision (some sources also list 10 November as a day off), the 4-day option is ideal. In that case you can visit Lahij comfortably in daylight.

Need an SUV for the route? A high-clearance vehicle is more comfortable on mountain roads and on the way to Lahij. For families and groups of 5–7, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport fits well, and for couples the Hyundai Tucson or the Kia Sportage. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates for the Goychay Pomegranate Festival 2026 and is there an entrance fee?

The Goychay Pomegranate Festival is traditionally held during the first weekend of November (typically November 7–8). Admission to the festival and agricultural street fair is completely free. Visitors can freely sample numerous pomegranate varieties, fresh-squeezed juices, and artisanal narsharab sauces.

What is the recommended departure time from Baku for the 7–9 November holiday weekend?

As the November holidays form a popular 3-day weekend, outgoing traffic from Baku can be heavy. We advise setting off early, ideally between 07:30 and 08:00 AM. This guarantees smooth daylight driving over the Shamakhi pass and puts you in Goychay right around midday for festival events.

What are the most photogenic autumn locations in Sheki and Gabala?

In Sheki, the intricate shebeke stained glass of the Sheki Khan's Palace and the stone courtyard of Kish Albanian Church are top picks. In Gabala, Lake Nohur with its morning mist and golden forest reflections, along with the Tufandag cable car overlooking colorful mountain slopes, offer unforgettable views.

How far in advance should hotels be booked for a 3-day autumn road trip?

The Pomegranate Festival and November holiday weekend represent peak domestic travel times. Premium hotels and authentic boutique stays in Sheki and Gabala often book out 2 to 3 weeks ahead. We strongly recommend securing your rooms at least 15–20 days before departure.

Is the road to Lahij suitable for a standard sedan during autumn?

The road to Lahij passes through a dramatic mountain gorge. It is manageable for a standard sedan in dry weather, but autumn rains can cause slick road surfaces and small loose gravel on sharp turns. For peace of mind and comfort, renting a high-clearance crossover or SUV is strongly advised.
